Piano Lessons in Berlin
I’m an experienced and passionate teacher based in Berlin. I’ve been teaching pupils of all ages and experience levels since 2013 and I love what I do.
Teaching Philosophy
Since 2013, I have taught piano to students of all ages and backgrounds — from complete beginners to advanced musicians, from young children to adults returning to the instrument after years away. I am a Suzuki Method teacher (Level 1 certified), and my approach is grounded in the belief that every child can learn, given the right environment of encouragement, listening, and consistency.
Over the years, I’ve come to believe that the true role of a teacher is not only to pass on musical knowledge and technique, but to nurture a deep and lasting love of music. While discipline and structure are essential, the most powerful motivator is always joy — joy in sound, in discovery, and in expression. My goal is to help each student grow into a confident, expressive musician with a strong ear, fluid technique, and the independence to continue learning for life.
Some students find motivation in preparing for exams, while others prefer a more exploratory path. I’m happy to support either approach — together, we’ll find a way of working that suits your goals and keeps you inspired. That said, I do work best with students and parents who are ready to make music a consistent and meaningful part of their week. To ensure we’re a good fit, I offer a three-month trial period for all new students
The Suzuki Method
There are a few crucial elements that set the Suzuki Method apart from more traditional ways of learning an instrument.
First and foremost, Suzuki students begin their musical journey by learning by ear. This reflects the mother-tongue approach to language — when we’re young, we learn to speak fluently through immersion, listening, encouragement, and by gradually linking sound to meaning. We don’t start reading before we can speak confidently, and the same is true of music. Listening deeply and regularly is at the heart of a child’s musical development..
Another central aspect of Suzuki methodology is the active involvement of parents. A parent must attend all lessons, learn the basics of the instrument alongside their child and become the “home teacher” — someone who encourages, listens, and helps guide daily practice. It’s a deeply collaborative approach. Many parents come in believing that music learning is mainly about discipline, and that their child should manage practice on their own. But that often changes once they try learning themselves and discover just how challenging — and rewarding — the process really is.
Learn with an experienced performer
I received several years of extensive training at the Eastman School of Music, USA and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, two of the world’s best musical institutions, gaining experience as an international performing musician. Below are live recordings made at some of my previous recitals.
Piano Lessons
The normal length for a lesson is 20-30 minutes for young children and 45 minutes for older children. 1 hour is suitable for students who already have a lot of experience.
Weekly lessons
This is the most common way to learn and is what I strongly recommend to all of my students. Weekly piano lessons are the surest way to improve and keep practice and preparation regular and consistent, which is important for anyone who wants to see their skills improve. These lessons are held during term time at a fixed weekly slot.
Single lesson
Booking a single one-off lesson is an option for those who will find it difficult to find time to commit to a weekly lesson because of work. This is only appropriate for adults who feel more comfortable practising on their own and who already have several years of experience at the keyboard. Single lessons are not suitable for children, nor for beginners or intermediate students, since they need consistent input and feedback.
Online trial session
I offer a free 30 minute no-strings-attached session to anyone who is considering taking up online piano lessons with me. This will give you the opportunity to see what the online lesson format is like and to give you an idea of what to expect in your piano lessons in general.
Theory, Aural Skills, Accompanying
Music theory tuition
Anyone wishing to take ABRSM exams beyond Grade 5 on their instrument must first pass the Grade 5 theory exam. Theory lessons follow a detailed programme according to the latest syllabus. Most only take the Grade 5 exam, but for those wishing to take the exams preceding Grade 5 or beyond up to Grade 8, please get in touch as well.
Aural skills
Regardless of which instrument you play or whether you sing, the ABRSM exams have a portion devoted to developing aural skills. This portion of the exam is exactly the same for singers and instrumentalists alike and requires the use of a piano. In addition to this, keen aural skills are essential to developing yourself as a musician at every level. This is generally aimed at non-pianists, who will need a pianist to help with this part of the exam.
Accompanying
I have many years of professional accompanying experience with singers and instrumentalists. Please contact me if you want to request an accompanist for a performance, audition or exam.
